Fall clean up

I would like to send out a big thank you to the volunteers who came out to lend a hand at our local community centre this saturday. A group of local volunteers took time out on a Saturday to help move 7 garden boxes out of the Ralph Brown Community Centre hockey rink, helping to get it ready for the winter season.
These boxes weren't light but with the help of 5 people we were able to get the boxes moved in less than an hour.

Thank you everyone for supporting both our community centre and our community gardens!

C.O.P.P. - The Citizens On Patrol Program

Would you like to make our neighbourhood safer?

Do you think you can make our neighbourhood better?

Would you like to meet other people in the neighbourhood that want the same things?

Join us for a community patrol!

The St. John’s Residents’ Association is interested in tarting up a Citizen On Patrol Program (COPP). COPP would initiate regular patrols of our streets by residents. COPP lets you take control over your neighbourhood, promotes safety, and helps build a sense of community. It is also an great way to meet your neighbours, make a difference and have a good time. We are trying to see if there are enough people willing to support this program.

If you are interested in volunteering or want to learn more call Maia (your Community Development Worker) at

Ralph Brown Community Garden

So spring has sprung and summer is almost here! To celebrate we will be having our planting party for the Ralph Brown Community Garden. It has been scheduled for June 7th (Monday) starting at 1pm. As this is a flexible event do not worry if you are busy until a bit later.

Machray will be our first gardeners arriving at the site around 1pm to start their planting. Hopefully Sindy will be able to wrangle some kids from the community centre to come by after school at 3:30 and if anyone from the Resident’s Association would like to come out at any time you would be more than welcome. All plants have been purchased and are ready to get into the ground. Can’t wait to see you there!

Message from the Chair

Well Hello Everyone. I know it has been a long time since we have written a newsletter and I hope that everyone had a warm and healthy holiday season. If you are like me – then you are now really looking forward to spring!!

We have been very busy in the last few months. We participated in the Picnic in the Park at St.John’s Park and look forward to doing it again this summer. We met a lot of new people that live in our neighborhood – it was nice to see so many people out for the event. We assisted in the hiring of a new Housing Coordinator – Kali Martin. One of the next big projects she will be working on will be the Exterior Fix-up Grant applications that will be coming out to you in a separate mailing. We also hired a Community Development Worker – Maia Graham-Derham. She will be a big help to our resident’s association.

Spring is usually when we hold our Annual General Meeting. One of the biggest problems with a spring meeting is that it is still too cold and/slippery outside and the attendance is very low. This year we are going to try something different. We are going to hold a fall Annual General Meeting. We hope that will better weather will come better attendance.

Now for my exciting news!! We are working on creating a community garden. It is all in the idea stage and we are presently trying to secure funding for this project. If you have any ideas regarding this project, share them with Maia at 927-2340. What I am hoping to see is a garden that will not only grow vegetables and flowers, but possibly some plants specific to the aboriginal people. I would love to have our Annual General Meeting combined with some form of meal – with ingredients that we all grew ourselves!! The present plans are for this garden to be located in the rink area of the Ralph Brown Community Center – and I would love nothing more than to see it become a true community project.

Hope to see everyone out and about soon. We will be participating in the Annual Community Clean-up on May 8th. Watch for more information on that event and hope to see you there.
