August Activities at Aboriginal Visioning for the North End

Aboriginal Visioning has some great activities this month! On top of that its all free!

Friday August 3 feel free to drop in for coffee or tea anytime!

On Tuesday August 7 Picnic in the Park planning meeting is being held at 10 a.m. at St. John's Park.

A Housing Gathering is at 586 Selkirk Avenue at 5 pm on Thursday August 9. Bus tickets and a FREE dinner are provided.

The North End Community Helper's Network meeting is on Friday August 10 at Kildonan Park at Noon.

Saturday August 25 is Picnic in the Park from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at St. John's Park.

In addition to all of these awesome events, every Wednesday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. is Women's Gathering where you can share in yummy food, meet people, do fun activities and get involved!

August 1 - Lunch is Garlic Sausage and Perogies and you can make keepsake boxes
August 8 - Sandwiches and Soup are lunch and the activity is Money with Maia!
August 15 - Lunch is Burgers, Fries and Coleslaw and enjoy a visit from Pathways
August 22 - Its' Breakfast for Lunch! Make Jewelry with Jessie later on :)
August 29 - Enjoy Sandwiches, Veggies & dip and then do beading with Gladys

Bleak House Program Coordinator - Job Position

Overview:

Bleak House Centre operates as a non-profit charity organization hosting a variety of activities for adults and seniors. It is a great home away from home for old friends and new friends alike who come together in a small group setting. With the closing of the Age and Opportunity Centre (Main Street) as of June 1st 2012, over 50 members have joined to form a stronger Bleak House Centre for activities for older adults.

Their Mission Statement is “A Centre for promoting active living, education and social activities.”

Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Human Resources Committee of Bleak House, implement the New Horizon Grant which includes programming for Computer, Ceramics, Pottery and Wood Carving instruction during 2012 –2013 year.

Key Duties:

- Conduct a Needs Assessment with respect to programming by October 30th, 2012.
- Coordinate the planning implementation, evaluation and documentation of the Technology, Ceramics, Pottery and Wood Carving instruction per the New Horizon grant.
- Be responsible for hiring of instructors
- Monitor / evaluate instructor and new programs
- Facilitate the delivery of recreational programs through procurement of materials and supplies, and may perform hands–on service delivery
- Schedule facility space for programs and activities
- Produce a monthly Calendar of Events outlining Bleak House activities and ensure website calendar is updated.
- Assist with Marketing and promotional efforts

Qualifications:

Experience in the administration of recreational or leisure activities
Experience in working with Older Adults
Self Starter
Strong Organizational Skills
Knowledge of Marketing and Programming
Strong Computer Skills

Main Street Farmers Market Trucking Along

Background: The Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre is currently seeking an individual for the positions of Cultural Advisor/Elder for three of their residential facilities. It is their goal that the incumbent will support positive change in youth through learning based principles of Aboriginal culture in a safe and supervised environment. Provide opportunities for improved self- esteem, self- sufficiency and social responsibilities through participation in activities and cultural programs. Provide opportunities for healthy fellowships/relationships among and youth.

Qualifications: Be able to establish relationships with residents build on a trust and genuine caring. Be able to provide teachings that are specific to the development of young women. Provide ceremonies to assist young women in their development i.e: sweat lodges, name giving ceremonies, making of woman ceremonies, sharing circles as determined by need, to create and maintain a safe environment for the young women.

Honoring the Aboriginal Culture Workshop Series

Join at the North End Women's Centre on the first and third Wednesday of the month during August and September.

These are free sessions for women only, are drop-in groups so no registration is required. Children's programs are available as are bus tickets and snacks.

August 6 from 9 a.m. - 1 pm is Sage Picking.

August 22 from 9:30 a.m. - 1 pm make Dream Catchers at Birds Hill Park and enjoy a picnic.

September 5 from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. is Grandmother Moon Teachings.

September 19 from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. is a Women's Sharing Circle.

Healthy Anger Group

Do you feel upset often? Would you like to make healthy choices when you feel angry?

Every Thursday from September 13 - November 1 from 1:30 - 3:30 pm, the Healthy Anger Group will meet at the North End Women's Centre.

How to express yourself in a healthy way without hurting others' feelings
What are healthy anger choices?
Early warning signs of anger

Other feelings and anger
Healthy Communication
Helping your children to deal with their anger

Inner Child Workshop Series

The North End Women's Centre at 394 Selkirk Avenue is inviting you to celebrate and reconnect with your inner child.

Learn what is our inner child, how you reconnect with your inner child, learn through information, music, exercises and activities and celebrate with laughter, tears and fun.

North End Womens Centre Summer Program Activities

In addition to the last post with ALL of the going ons at the North End Women's Centre, here is a larger explanation of the events! The Summer Program is to promote and encourage positive relationships between women and their children/grandchildren through fun summer activities.

It is required that you sign up before hand for outings and it is noted that times may change for outings.

August 2, 2012– Tinkertown!! Groups will be meeting @ NEWC at 10am and the bus will leave at 10:30 to Tinkertown. A snack will be provided.

August 9, 2012 KP Day! Groups will be meeting @ NEWC at 11am and catch a transit bus for 11:30 to Kildonan Park Pool. Don’t forget you towels and swimwear! Snack will be provided.

August 13, 2012-Zoo Day! - Meeting @ NEWC for 11:15am where groups will travel together by a transit bus to Assiniboine Park Zoo to have a fun day outside learning new things about animals. A small lunch will be provided. Don’t forget you hat and a good pair of walking shoes! Snack will be provided.

August 14, 2012-St. John’s Library Day - Groups will meet at NEWC at 1:30 and walk to St. John’s library to see a special performance by singer/storyteller Aaron Burnett! Snack will be provided.

August 16, 2012– Craft - Families will be decorating hats and tote bags together. Everyone will get to keep there new hat and bags! A lunch will be provided.

August 20, 2012– Family Pictures and Craft - Families will be having family pictures and making our own picture frames for our family portrait. Snack will be provided.

August 23, 2012-Community Spa Day - Women will have the opportunity to sign up for two free services such as haircuts, makeup, nails, and pedicure.

Berry Picking with Ralph Brown Community Centre!

Looking for something awesome to do on Thursday August 2?

Ralph Brown Community Centre has chartered a bus to head out to Boonstra Farms to pick berries. If you would like to join get to RBCC at the latest by 10:45. The bus leaves at 11!

Volunteer Coordinator position - Oyate Tipi Cumini Yape

This position is under the direct supervision of the Manager of Oyate Tipi. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the overall recruitment, organization and support for volunteer efforts within Oyate Tipi Cumini Yape.

Responsibilities include:
  • Organizes any photographs of staff and volunteers and/or events that Oyate Tipi hots or participants in
  • Maintains profiles on volunteers, including preferences, skills and hourly contributions, etc
  • Coordinates schedules of volunteer efforts
  • Responds to regular correspondence and inquiries from existing or potential volunteers
  • Assists when possible or trains volunteers, casuals or placements in taking, recording, returning and scheduling calls that come in to the donation line
  • Provides regular updates of volunteer activities to the Manager and Board of Directors
  • Prepares and maintains volunteer orientation packages
  • Maintains a waiting list for essential household items which are not in stock at the clients time of appointment
  • Assist in program development, facilitates programs delivery, coordinates and schedules training initiatives, etc
  • Assists with the planning of special events, particularly regular volunteer appreciation events
  • Assists women in the selection of their furniture and/or household goods and ensures basic needs are met; Provided Oyate Tipi has all necessary essential items in stock
  • Develops a core of volunteers that are willing to provide set up for the clients after appointments who agree to receiving set up assistance
  • Assists donors with donation drop offs as needed, with or without the assistance of staff or volunteers
  • Identifies realistic volunteer opportunities, in cooperation with other volunteers and staff
  • Supports active volunteerism from the general public through:
    • Recruitment of volunteers
    • Providing training and orientation to volunteers as necessary
    • Ensuring recognition of volunteers
  • Acting as principle staff contact and resource to existing and potential volunteers
  • Supports the development of capacity in Oyate Tipi's clients through volunteer opportunities, by:
    • Talking with clients and informing them of volunteer opportunities
    • Developing and organizing specific skill development opportunities that can be obtained through volunteering
    • Providing ongoing support to generate confidence and capacity within the respective volunteer opportunity; and,
    • Identifying opportunities within partner agencies and referring client volunteers accordingly
    • Coordinates volunteer activities to ensure warehouse is maintained in a safe and organized manner
Qualifications and Experience Required:
  • Must possess diploma and/or additional post-secondary (relevant to position)
  • Previous work experience in community development/education and/or youth/social work
  • Experience of managing or coordinating projects and volunteers
  • Experience using Microsoft office (word, excel, power point) and outlook
  • Must have strong organizational skills, excellent writing skills and ability to multi-task
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to assist in developing programs
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others
  • Valid Drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
In addition the position is subject to a criminal record and child abuse checks.

Free August workshops at the Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre

In August there will be free workshops offered at the Main Office of the Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre at 1150A Waverley Street and the Outreach Centre at 104-3100 Pembina Highway (Buzz code 1003).

At the 1150A Waverley Street location the workshops offered are:

Thursday August 9 at 10 a.m. until Noon is the 'You Rock' Workshop. It will discuss how spreading joy creates a sense of internal joy and how random acts of kindness will build your confidence and how to feel more wonderful by spreading the message of beauty. 'You Rock' rocks will be created as well. Space for this workshop is limited and pre-registration is required by calling 204-477-1123. This is a woman's only event and there is no childcare available.

Thursday August 16 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. will be a workshop where you will learn about family conciliation's free services. Family Conciliation is a branch of the Manitoba Government that offers free resolution services to families going through separation and divorce. Space is again limited for this workshop and pre-registration is required by calling 204-477-1123. This is a women only event and childcare, healthy snacks and bus tickets are available!

On Thursday August 23 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Chair Yoga is offered. This workshop will offer fundamentals of yoga postures, breath and meditation, all using a chair. They request that you bring a towel. This is also a space limited workshop and pre-registration is again required. It is a women only event and no childcare will be available.

Creating Balance in Your Life is offered on Tuesday August 14 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. This workshop teaches what you need to create balance in your life. This is a women's only event and registration is also requested by calling the number above. Childcare is available.

The free clothing room and resources will be available on August 17 from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Again, women only and childcare is available.

Lastly, on August 28 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. 'Budgeting and smart shopping tips workshop' is being offered. Contact 204-477-1123 to register for this women's only event. Childcare will be available.
